This week my wife and I finally exercised our freedom to work liberated from compulsory membership in the Michigan Education Association. Both of us generated a letter to the Michigan Education Association via the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s website, August Opt-Out. Dropping that envelope through the slot, I felt free as I walked away from the post office knowing we had finally severed ties with an organization that has, unfortunately, become more and more politically radicalized and focused primarily on electing radical Progressives than anything else.
I am not opposed to collective bargaining. Collective bargaining, in and of itself, is not an immoral thing, but when one is FORCED to associate with MEA or be fired from a teaching job, that violates the principle of freedom of association. That was the choice I faced for 17 years as a public school teacher. One has an inherent right to associate with whom one chooses to do so free from coercion. Being forced to pay over $900 per year to fund an organization I found questionable, at best, was a violation of that basic right to associate with whom I choose.
Like I said, I’m not opposed to collective bargaining, but that fact is always coupled with the assumption that collective bargaining must be conducted as a matter of free association by all parties involved. I would support my local union – if it made provision for local membership alone with a 100% ironclad guarantee that NONE OF MY DUES MONEY would ever fund either the MEA or the NEA.
My local union leadership flat out said, “NO,” to that proposal. They would not make provision for local membership alone. The union left me no choice. The union left me.
MEA-NEA is one of the most radically Progressive Left-leaning organizations in America today. Most teachers who are members in NEA, and/or its associate organizations, are completely unaware of this simple fact. I tried to alert members of my local union to NEA’s leading role in HCAN (Healthcare for America Now), an organization that was instrumental in ramming Obamacare through the U.S. House and Senate via intense lobbying.
I tried to alert members of my local union to NEA’s implementation of radical leftist tactics against Conservatives taught by Saul Alinsky in his book, Rules for Radicals. NEA not only used (still uses?) Alinsky’s tactics to train AR’s (Association Representatives, a.k.a. union stewards) how to organize at the grassroots level, but also posted one of Alinsky’s most vile quotes on their website. Contrary to claims my own local leaders have made in my presence, NEA promoted Alinsky’s violent hatred of Conservatives by actually posting this Alinsky quote on their website, “Society has good reason to fear the Radical…. He hits, he hurts, he is dangerous. Conservative interests know that … Radicals are most adept at breaking the necks of Conservatives.”
It was conservative teachers like me who alerted friends and family on social media about this violent, radical rhetoric being spewed on NEA’s webpage, “Association Representatives Resources.” When NEA’s promotion of such filth ran into public criticism NEA finally removed the pages from public view. Who knows if they still promote this sort of thing in training meetings and/or on password protected pages?
I saved a screen shot of the nasty stuff though, as can be seen below. Michigan Conservatives like me helped elect a Republican majority to both houses of the state legislature in order to promote legislation that upholds Michiganders’ Constitutionally protected rights to be free to work where we choose without being forced to join a nasty union like MEA-NEA. Why anyone who aspires to work as a professional educator would choose to affiliate with an association that promotes this sort of drivel is difficult to fathom.
The objectives of this Progressive Leftist organization are readily apparent to anyone who takes the time to actually read through even a few of the NEA’s annual resolutions. Needless to say, as a Conservative, I am opposed to some of the more obvious radical agenda items including: the sham “science” that claims humans are warming the globe, I do not support destroying America’s nuclear defense capability; I am opposed to Radical Progressives’ “gun control”; nor do I agree with NEA’s anti-biblical support for creating special legal status based on one’s so-called “sexual orientation.”
All I have left to say to MEA-NEA is, “Good riddance!”
