How Rubio Lost My Support

Share

Marco Rubio betrayed his supporters when he flip-flopped on a campaign promise he’d made to oppose Amnesty for illegal immigrants already living in the U.S.  My wife and I made a small donation to Rubio’s 2010 U.S. Senate campaign because we were sick and tired of Obama’s efforts to “fundamentally transform America.”  We listened as Marco Rubio was interviewed on talk radio.  We were impressed by Rubio’s clear articulation of conservative principles – including on immigration.  We need conservatives who can make a clear case for conservatism, and Rubio seemed promising.  So we supported him.

Specifically on the issue of immigration, Rubio had caught our attention.  Consider this transcript excerpt from an interview Rubio did where he specifically stated his opposition to Amnesty:

Interviewer: And you’re never going to have a legal immigration system that works if you grant amnesty.

Rubio: And that’s why I’ve always believed that, no matter how well-intentioned it is. I understand the human stories that we’re going to…We’re gonna….There are going to be stories of very young kids that were brought to this country at a very young age who don’t even speak Spanish that are going to be sent back to Nicaragua or some other place. And it’s gonna feel weird and I understand that. The goal here is to have an immigration policy that works. And if you provide a path for people to enter this country illegally and if they stay here long enough and pay enough in taxes, well let them stay legally…why would anyone come in through the legal process? [Emphasis in bold text added.]

To then see Marco Rubio leading the charge with the Gang of 8 pushing for Amnesty … the level of betrayal was deep and I will never forget it.  I will never support Marco Rubio again for office.  You can read more about Marco Rubio’s betrayal on Amnesty here, but all I need to know is that I once supported him because he promised to hold the line on illegal immigration and then he turned around and stabbed conservatives in the back.

Someone who betrays you hasn’t earned a promotion.  So why give him one?  Don’t waste your vote on a man who betrayed his supporters by doing a complete one hundred eighty degree turn around on an issue that was central to the campaign that got him elected.

I support Ted Cruz for president because he consistently upholds and defends the U.S. Constitution.
